"Praise Him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs."

What does the Bible say about dancing?

A phenomenon has taken place in our homeschool circle recently.  We learned to dance the Virginia Reel.  And it has proved to be a joyous, old-fashioned, animating experience! (For some, that is. Others seem to have an abject terror of said dancing;)

However, when I was little, I always thought of dancing as something that was bad.  Something Christians shouldn't do.
As Christians, we should strive to glorify the Lord in every aspect of our lives.  That includes searching the scriptures diligently to find out what His will is for us - His children.

After I made this little study, I felt so joyful that I wanted to run and shout and dance and sing!  From these verses, it seems clear that the dance is used for praise, for rejoicing, for glad worship to the King of kings.  It is the opposite of mourning and lamentation.

Let us then be girt about with gladness, that our glory may sing praise to him, and not be silent!

''Thou hast turned for me my mourning into dancing:

thou hast put off my sackcloth, and girded me with gladness;

To the end that my glory may sing praise to thee, and not be silent.

O LORD my God, I will give thanks unto thee for ever. - Ps. 30:11-12

Praise Him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs. - Ps. 150:4

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven...

...A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance. - Eccl. 3:1&4

Praise ye the LORD. Sing unto the LORD a new song, and his praise in the congregation of saints.

Let Israel rejoice in him that made him: let the children of Zion be joyful in their King.

Let them praise his name in the dance: let them sing praises unto him with the timbrel and harp. - Ps. 149:1-3

"Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God." - 1 Cor. 10:31

Rejoice in the dance!

It has been a joyous and delightful experience learning to dance the Virginia reel!
Hmm, now I wonder who you could be talking about that doesn't enjoy the dancing?? ;)
We know what to do once they start wanting to dance, don't we dear...;)

I'm so glad you did this study on dancing!
The pictures and the verses are so beautiful together - I love the dreamy, old-fashioned look:)

"Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God." - 1 Cor. 10:31

What a wonderful reminder!  Everything we do should bring glory and honor to God, including dancing!  May I join you in running, shouting, dancing, and singing, my dear?!=)

Lovingly,

~Lady Edith~

No, I don't mind:)
Sounds like fun to me - dancing all the time!:)

As Jane Austen put it...

''It may be possible to do without dancing entirely. Instances have been known of young people passing many, many months successively, without being at any ball of any description, and no material injury accrue to either body or mind; - but when a beginning is made - when the felicities of rapid motion have once been, though slightly, felt - it must be a very heavy set that does not ask for more.''  - from Emma

You're very welcome, Lauren!

Yes, Tasha, you may join me in my exuberant capers, and right gladly!

Does anyone have any other insight they would like to share?  I would love to hear whet y'all have to say on what I hope will prove to be a very rewarding topic.

I think there will be more picture/bible verse collages here in the future - I really enjoyed making this one! :)

Love,

~Kellie~

Looks like TONS of fun!! :)
I love to dance. Glorious fun. We recently learned a few more dances while visiting in MO/AR. They have a folk dance/dance class every month "up" there. (Our standard dance has always been the Virginia Reel, so we were glad to learn some more) :)
I like the way you incorporated verses in the pictures!

I have also grown up thinking dancing was well... a really wicked thing to do. But I think if you do it in the right way and just have fun it's a really great thing. I had a fantastic time the last time I did it and I hope we do it more. Aren't you glad I made you do it Lauren :)? I really like how you tied in all the verses with the pictures Kellie. Those are some really good pictures too :).

Thanks, Michelle!

I agree. Something like dancing could get out of hand if done in the wrong spirit.  But from what I've seen so far, it's been all pure, old-fashioned fun, and a vast improvement to, shall we say, airsoft? ;-)

Let's keep it that way - all things for the glory of God!

I'm so glad you enjoyed dancing at your party!  Hopefully we'll do it again soon:)
Yes, you had fun, Lauren, I'm sure you did. =)

Sarah,

I just thought I'd say "hi":)  I've so enjoyed peeking in on your family's life through your blog, ever since Kellie gave me a link to it.  I feel like I know you, and the rest of your family:)  Congratulations on your new baby brother!  He's adorable!  I just wish I could hold him - we're a bit short on babies around here;)
If you'd like to do some peeking of your own, feel free to do so on my blog.

Could you possibly share some of the other dances that y'all learned while you were visiting in MO/AR?
We're not tired of the Virginia reel yet, but it would be nice to know a few more dances:)
I've been searching the internet for some other folk dances for us to try, but I've been unable to find any so far...

Dancing... yes, there's nothing quite like it!  I'm loving it too:)

Oh, what fun!  A dancing class every month!  There would be no excuse for them, then.  Yes, please do tell us what new dances you've learned.  It's rather hard to find folk/country dances online.:/

I did discover two, though, the Patacake polka, and the Cumberland Square Eight, which should be easy to figure out.

Ahem, I would revise the steps in the Cumberland slightly, omitting the basket step... for obvious reasons...;)

Love in Christ,

~Kellie~

Girls,

I'm not fluently versed in blogging etiquette, but it struck me that it would be nice if those of you who don't know each other were "introduced", so to speak, for the overall enjoyment of all concerned.

I would like my web log to be a place where I can share dreams, ideas, and remarkably breathtaking, fabulously exciting happenings with you all. =D  I would also love this to be used as a place where Christ-honoring conversations and strengthening friendships will flourish.

So, without further ado...
You all have probably heard of each other at some point:)  We met the Discher family at the Jamestown 400 in 2007.  (And we are looking forward to "meeting" you all again someday!)

Sarah, I believe you "know" Tasha already, and I'd like to introduce my friends Michelle, and Lauren.

I'm sorry if this is rather... informal?  I do hope I'm not imposing on anyone.
And now, let us continue in brotherly love. :)

Lovingly,

~Myself~

(a.k.a  Kellie)  >=o)

P.S. Yes, it's rather late;)

Good idea, my dear:)

It's so nice to have this group of friends to talk to on our blogs.
It's going to be especially nice during the winter when we've all got cabin fever=D

Love,

Hello, Natasha!
Yes, Kellie has written a lot about y'all, and sent pictures so it almost seems as if we have met. :) I am glad you have enjoyed the blog! I look forward to "Peeking" into your life as well. ;) You have to love the blogosphere! :)
Great to "meet" the rest of y'all as well!
Hmm....The dances. Well, I don't remember the names of most of them. I know one was called the Saltydog Rag. It was a lot of fun! (You will want a brother or cousin to dance with though) :) Another fun, simple one was called "Pop goes the Weasel" It is very easy and a lot of fun. I'll write you Kellie, when I get more names from my cousin. :)

God Bless!

I'm looking forward to "seeing" you on my blog;)
Something that has really encouraged me this year, was finding so many blogs of Bible believing Christian, homeschooled families, and especially the blogs of like-minded girls.
I have such a wonderful group of friends in our little corner of the world, but, at times, it seems like we're all alone - it's nice to know that there are others out there, all the way on the other side of the USA, and around the world:)
I wouldn't have even known that there were so many of "us" if it weren't for the internet and blogs.

I can hardly wait to learn some of the "new" dances!=)

Hello, Rebecca!  So nice to "meet" you:)
I've heard a lot about you from Kellie.  From what she's said, it sounds like you all had a really good time when they visited you back in '07:)  Cousins are special friends.
I hope you come out here for a visit sometime - it would be so nice to meet you in person!

~Tasha~

P.S. It was rather miraculous that we got any of the boys to dance!  My brother was very helpful, and helped us get the rest of the boys to dance.  Although none of them will admit it, I think they all had a really good time:)

Hello, Rebecca!!!
So good to have you stop by!  This is so fun;)  Don't worry about "blog ineptness" - It's a common ailment around here=)  At least, as far as I'm concerned.
Yes, we need to get y'all out here for a visit very soon... I can hardly wait!
TTYL!

Much love,

~Kellie~
